Whether in concert or on CD, his performance is always marked by a combination of breathtaking technical virtuosity and profound and expressive musicality. His first album, featuring spectacular transcriptions (SK62691), some written by Volodos himself, was released in autumn 1997; accompanied as it was by the pianist's first live appearances, it caused an absolute sensation. The CD was awarded several prizes (Gramophone Editor's Choice, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik) and received outstanding reviews. Thanks to his sensational début CD and much-acclaimed recitals, it wasn't long before Arcadi Volodos was being invited to play in the world's leading concert halls. Since then he has worked with some of the world's most renowned orchestras and conductors, among them the Berlin, New York and London Philharmonic orchestras, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, the Boston Philharmonic and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Yann Tiersen31 May 12MayFestivalsIceland - ReykjavíkShow moreCelebrated composer and multi instrumentalist Yann Tiersen will be a guest of the Reykjavík Arts Festival 2012 with a special acoustic performance of his new album Skyline. Tiersen is a renowned and startlingly unique artist whose early albums merged cutting edge classical with flourishes of folk with the bristly energy of post punk, and while these works attracted a dedicated fan base, it was his soundtrack to the beloved indie film “Amelie” which introduced Tiersen to a far wider audience. Since then Tiersen has continued to attract fans with a continuously evolving sound and memorable live performances at everything from distinguished concert halls to rock festivals.Skyline is the seventh studio album by Yann Tiersen and follows on from its darker sister Dust Lane, released in 2010.  Skyline was largely recorded at Tiersen's tiny weather beaten island home of Ouessant in the Atlantic off the coast of West Britanny, with further parts recorded in San Francisco and Paris.  A final mix with producer Ken Thomas (Sigur Rós, M83, Dave Gahan) saw the album completed in Leeds.
The Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra plays Bach Suites20 May 12MayFestivalsIceland - ReykjavíkShow moreThis concert will be the first occasion that the Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra plays in the main hall of Harpa, Eldborg, and will also be the first concert in that hall that is dedicated solely to the music of Bach.  The Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra is renowned for its interpretation of the works of Bach, and will be directed by Richard Egarr, a vivid interpreter of the baroque style, sometimes labeled ”The Leonard Bernstein of Early Music“.  Egarr, Music Director of The Academy of Ancient Music since 2006, is sought-after by period and non-period orchestras around the world as a conductor and soloist, performing concerti on harpsichord, piano and organ.Orchestral suites were fashionable in the baroque period, the French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully most likely having initiated the trend when he compiled overtures and dances from his operas into suites for concert use. Other composers began gradually to imitate this style of composition but according to connoisseurs, Bach‘s orchestral suites outshine all other comparable works.
Urban Ballet 25 May 12
26 May 12May
TheatreHong Kong - Sheung WanShow moreChoreographer Anthony Égéa attempts to explore new possibilities of choreography by combining the energy of hip hop with the rigorous precision of classical dance, while using a mixture of music by two famous French composers, Antonio Vivaldi and Maurice Ravel. This cross-genre piece consists of four acts, illustrating four different states of the human body, performed by 10 dancers who master classical dance and hip hop with artistic maturity.  Urban Ballet is a mixture of ballet and street dance with definite and yet somehow unclear demarcation between the two. The virtuoso dancers move freely with multiple techniques from modern dance to hip hop and ballet. Despite obvious differences in movements and music between the two sets of dual acts, the four acts merge harmoniously into a “fusion of dance” that blends all dancing techniques and forms into one. Urban Ballet shows the different possibilities of choreography by showcasing the rhythm, power and movements of various dances.
